HH63 – The Diesel Unholy Cocktail Cigar and Starbucks Sumatra Coffee

Category : Havana Hut Episodes

This week it’s Mike’s turn to go it alone and he seizes the opportunity to go with a strong flavored pairing and does the first Havana Hut review with some java.

This week’s cigar and libation pairing:

Listen now:

Just yesterday I was out smoking a Cusano M1 Robusto and was thinking about writing in to ask if you guys ever paired cigars with other drinks & foods, specifically coffee and chocolate.

Jim and I have talked about coffee specifically for some time now… but as a non-coffee drinker it’s been tough to get him on board… the opportunity to do a solo show was just the ticket I needed.

What other suggestions would you make?

– Mike

Well, I’m not a fan of flavored cigars, unless it’s something akin to a stiff drink. Cherry, chocolate, and others I’ve tried just don’t go for me. My thought is, instead of flavoring the cigar, which so far doesn’t work for me, why not try the cigar with the actual food. Chocolates, cheesecake, and candies (mints especially) , for example. I like the coffee pairing, so I hope to hear more of your matchings.

Mike-

Coffee is absolutely one of the perfect pairings for cigars. I find myself enjoying a cigar with coffee especially during mornings or during the day.

Let me give you a few suggestions for coffee and cigar ideas:

1. Try fresh roasts (Black Dog Coffee, Terroir, or Torcedor). Although we all enjoy Starbucks coffee as a matter of convenience, it is not the best, and it is actually old coffee as you do not know how long it has been sitting in a shelf. Coffee beans have a finite shelf life once they are roasted, and once the vacuum seal is broken, it goes very quick.

2. I have paired cigars with coffee drinks – my favorite being the Irish coffee. I have tried both with and without the whipped cream, and, to me, it makes no difference. Other suggestions: coffee and Baileys Irish Cream; Frangelico, etc. I have found that medium bodied cigars work best (CAO Gold, Jameson Black Labek, etc.)

3. Look at George Howell’s Terroir Coffee website; he give you lots of great tips on how to drink it. I had the opportunity to take a workshop from him at Boston University, and I learned so much.

Mike,

I have not listened to your segment but I do have an edit for you. Sumatra is not a blend. It is a single origin coffee.

Thanks Claudia -

I don’t think I called it a blend in the show itself, but I’ll correct the post.

– Mike

I have to say, not sure if you have tried any cigars with dark beer(sure you have), but I had a Diesel tonight with a ZiegenBock(only available in Texas), and it was a match made in HEAVEN!!!! Anyone who smokes cigars in Texas, try a Diesel with a Ziegenbock, the flavors complement each other wonderfully!

I really like your blog, the theme is good and the info you provide is really impressive, I am going to come back to check on the e info you put up, best of luck and keep up the good work.
