Episode 84 – Things to Consider on Election Day

Category : Mind of Men Episodes
Welcome to another of our “mini episodes” during one of our off weeks.  With the Presidential Election this week, Jim figured that since we had planned to do this topic in one of our shows and were rapidly running out of time, we would do an off-week mini episode – turned out when Jim was done recording it was not so mini.

Jim had to fly solo on this one with the exception of the cigar and libation segment at the end which had been previously recorded.

Jim starts by talking about some of the positive things this past week in the stock market, touches on the Windows 7 news released this week, discusses some suggestions for dealing with the Police when stopped, and briefly editorilizes on the latest crop of Mac switcher ads.

In the politics segment, Jim talks about Ted Steven’s conviction and decision to continue to pursue re-election in spite of it and shares a story about a local Boston politician who is in a similar situation.  Jim also discusses a story about how most major newspapers have endorsed one candidate or the other and wonders if this is really an appropriate thing for a news organziation to be doing.

In the second segment, Jim presents some final thoughts that you might want to consider as you go to the election booth this coming week.  Jim thinks that he stayed relatively non-partisan, but you can be the judge of that.

Finally, we sample a gimmick cigar and libation pairing for this week.

Episode 83 – Fall Prep Activities Around the House

Category : Mind of Men Episodes
Welcome to our first episode “in the raw” which means that we put this episode out the way we recorded it with no editing.  We are anxious to hear your feedback on how we did and if you liked (or disliked this new approach).  We hope you like it as it cuts way down on the editing time and paves the way for us to start doing these as live episodes down the road.

We start by lamenting the elimination of the Red Sox in the ALCS.  We then discuss one of the recent stories about how a majority of Americans do not approve of the Federal bailout .  The Move Over Law is another topic as it is being considered as legislation here in Massachusetts.

Do you remember the old DAK gadget catalog from the late 80’s and early 90’s?  We do and its back in an online format.

The anti-smoking lobby has scored another victory as the Dalmore Cigar Malt Scotch becomes the latest victim.

In our tech gadget segment, we talk about the wonderful VMCNetflix software for streaming your NetFlix watch now movies to your Xbox 360 for free and the debut of OpenOffice 3.0.

In our politics segment, we talk about the latest article showing that T. Boone Pickens’ energy plan is somewhat more self serving than he lets on.  We also talk about how theft and defacement of campaign signs is on the rise this year, Joe the Plumber’s contribution to the election discourse and cover the endorsement of Barak Obama by Colin Powell.

Finally, we offer a great cigar and libation pairing this week (according to Mike – Jim is still on the fence on this one).

Havana Hut #26 is now posted

Category : Mind of Men Episodes

Hey Guys, although this is our off week and we don’t have a regular show, we have posted Episode #26 of the Havana Hut.  This week, we review the Gurkha Legend Anniversary cigar and the Auchentoshan 17 year old Bordeaxu Wine Casked Scotch Whisky.

This is the first Havana Hut episode we have ever done that is not attached to a regular Mind of Men episode.

Mike will be updating the feed sometime this week so that subscribers will get it automatically, but if you are in a hurry and want to listen now, you can find it here

Enjoy, and we’ll see you next week.

Episode 82 – A little Civics lesson and our first classic pairing

Category : Mind of Men Episodes
This week’s episode begins with a rundown of some headlines including Chrysler and GM’s wedding dance, US and North Korean relations moving forward, Ford unveiling MyKey, and how AMEX profiles customers. From there on to tech, Jim points out how XP won’t die, and Mike points out a post about Windows top 10 historic security flaws, and RealDVD’s problems.
We skipped a break and plowed right into our politics segement where Jim talked about some of the historical background that voters should consider in the upcoming election.  No, we don’t tell you how to vote, but we do offer you some non-partisan food for thought as you go into the voting booth.
Finally, we offer the first of what we hope will be many classic cigar and libation pairings.  We’ve tried a lot of cigars and beverages in the past, but this combination blew us away.
